BEST RELEASES this week – 28.09.2018

This week especially saw a lot of new releases from many artists, including an Olly Murs and Snoop Dog collaboration (who would have thought?!). Here are the best ones rounded up into one post:

Hailed as Hull’s biggest Indie Rock band, The Hubbards have returned with a new track to bring a close to a successful 2018 which saw them being the first to headline a huge show at the new Bonus Arena in Hull and saw 2 of their new releases, including this one, supported by Spotify and BBC Introducing. ‘Good When I’m Done’ is slower than usual, but the lyrics are raw and open, and it is one of the best songs The Hubbards have released so far. It precedes the tour the band are just about to embark on to finish the year, which will see them play places such as London, Brighton, Manchester and Glasgow.

Easy Life have been on the rise since their debut song ‘Pockets’ was released last year, their music getting better with every release. ‘Nightmares’ still carries across the groovy feel that Easy Life’s music has become known for, but the lyrics in this one particularly stand out due to the nature of the topics discussed. Subjects include insomnia, peer pressure and anxiety with the song acting as a metaphor for the events described in the song as the bright, jazzy sound contrasts with the darker meaning behind the lyrics. This week has been especially triumphant for Easy Life, with them appearing on Jools Holland on Tuesday evening to perform the song and being marked as Apple Music’s ‘New Artist of the Week’.

Zuzu was recommended to me by my friend Abbie (movesandgrooves), who describes her as ‘the rising queen of the music scene’ and certainly isn’t wrong about that. With her distinct sound and unique lyrics, she’s one you will remember due to her originality and risk to stand out, and ‘Dark Blue’ is another hit from her.

In preparation for the release of their upcoming EP ‘You Can Have It’, Bloody Knees have released one of the featured singles ‘Something Nice’. Frontman Bradley Griffiths said the band were still finishing writing the track as they were recording it, resulting it being one of those songs that is pretty much in the moment with the fun and energy you hear in it coming from that. Bloody Knees are heading out on tour next week, where this track, as well as the rest of the EP, will sure receive a good reaction from the crowds they’ll be facing.

Sophie and the Giants are currently on tour with Tom Grennan after being personally invited to join him in the European leg. ‘Bulldog’ perfectly encapsulates everything we love about the band – their energy, the lively vibe and strong vocals. It’s another banger, and puts them on the path to be huge.

The self-proclaimed ‘Connoisseurs of Jangly Dream Pop’ SPINN are back with their latest hit ‘Boredom’, a bright and breezy song which has so far received an amazing response on their current tour. The band have previously said that modern indie music doesn’t really influence them, instead being inspired by 80s artists, and that is especially reflected in this track with the dreamy synth hooks and hazy vocals. There’s been a huge hype around SPINN lately, especially in their hometown Liverpool where they recently played a sold out gig at the local O2 Academy, and this track alone showcases why so many people have been buzzing about them.

Since the release of their debut single early last year, Stereo Honey have wasted no time as they have continuously toured and produced music with no time for a break. 2018 has seen them play a string of huge festivals, such as Boardmasters and Reading & Leeds, and release a further 3 singles, including the latest one ‘Icarus’. It features mellow melodies created by the smooth effects of the guitars overshadowed by captivating vocals, causing you to reminisce on your memories. It is the last track the band will release before they put out their next EP titled ‘A Place Called Home’ which will feature all of the tracks released this year as well as a brand new one. There’s nothing slowing the band down as they continue to make a name for themselves, and with way they are going, they are sure to be ones you will constantly hear about soon.

‘Wisdom Tooth’ is the first song to be released from The Pale White’s forthcoming EP titled ‘Take Me To The Strange’, out on November 2nd. Worked on inbetween tours and shows, the track possesses energetic and heavy indie rock riffs. It gives a promising taste of what’s to come with this EP, and just makes us all the more excited for it.
